Daniel Charles (Charlie) Philpott was a son-in-law of my great-grandfather, Edwin Flower Mitchell. Charlie and Edwin were both licencees of The Anchor Inn (323 Gloucester Road, Bristol) at various times from the late 1890s onwards - Charlie was the licencee for 40 years! My grandparents, Florence Elizabeth Mitchell and George Charles Burchill met there in 1905 when she was working there as a barmaid and he was a customer!
Though the caption says the bar is currently Bar Oz, it has now been renamed and is "The Anchor". |
Went on the train to visit family in 1911 but couldn't get back to work (presumably because of the train strike?!)

He was shot in the legs at Suvla Bay and spent time in hospital in Malta before returning to England for a year. 5 weeks before his death he was sent to France and was wounded again in both legs, his right leg was amputuated above the knee and nursing sister WM Langlands wrote to the family to tell them of the grave situation, and then again to inform them of his death. These are from OH's tree.
The above photo is on a postcard and written on the back it says: Best Wishes from Ben to Mother Lily and Bert Write soon The wound is on my left hand. and this one is also a photo on a postcard, this time with the photographer's details: Photo by W White, 21 Broad St, Wolverhampton and the writing says: Keep this one and I will send you an enlargement. That's me standing up. Ben. After about 20 years++ of wondering we are still stuck with who Ben is! We know who Lily and Bert are, but whilst "mother" is obviously Ben's mother she isnt their mother too. I don't know what that dress uniform is either. Oh and I forgot, who else thinks the two Ben's don't look like the same person, yet the name and handwriting seem the same! |
We have no idea who this is other than that it is a member of my husbands family.

This is his brother-in-law, Captain Edmund Walker, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Edmund was also awarded the Military Cross, in July 1917. He was awarded two bars to his MC over the course of the rest of WW1. |
My grandfathers brother William Henry Newey 1891-1950.
Royal Navy 1909-1921 He had a habit of going AWOL. The story was the family were told he was lost at sea as his ship had sunk. He turned up at my grandparents house and nearly gave my grandmother a heart attack, she thought he was dead. He'd missed the ship sailing and so lived. http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...liamHenry2.png http://i660.photobucket.com/albums/u...amHenry1-1.jpg |
The is one of the few of OH's unnamed photos which we have managed to identify since we started his tree:
He's Robert Henry Alexander Cotton, 1893-1960, OH's first cousin twice removed (in later years he was the spitting image of OH!). This photo was taken in June/July 1911 when he was first posted aboard HMS Renown. EDIT: OH points out the photo wasn't unnamed - it said "Bob" on the back!! lol |
Another of OH's.....this one has a name - just Leonard! lol He looks very innocent.
