David Smith

My great grandfather David Smith was born 25 Sep 1876 in Blairgowrie, Perth, the elder of two illegitimate children of weaver Margaret Smith.

He worked in the jute mills from an early age and is usually recorded as a bobbin mill turner. He married Robina Nicholson in 1897 in Dundee and they settled in Ferryport-on-Craig (Tayport) where they had five children.

I don't know when David signed up but he was a private in the Black Watch 2nd Batallion (Royal Highlanders) and served in the Persian Gulf - I think in what used to be called Mesopotamia? He died 7th Jan 1916 and is buried in the Amarah Cemetery on the bank of the Tigris in Iraq. His youngest child was two days short of his first birthday.
