Is there anywhere that I can find a persons job title especialy people born in the 1700 and who died before the censuses.

Sometimes baptism records give the father's occupation. Sometimes marriage records give the groom's occupation. Also burial records sometimes give occupation. It just depends on the particular parish register. A person's will usually has their occupation at the beginning, but of course not everyone left a will.

Was Thomas Henry's son?

Okay, looking at some trees on Ancestry, it seems that Henry Bennett is the one who married Hannah Stanley 18 Dec 1757 at All Saints, Wigan. Is that right? If so, then Lancashire OPC says their marriage was by licence, so you could see whether you can find their marriage licence allegation and / or bond, and see whether his occupation is shown. Also look for an image of the actual parish register marriage record just in case.

Also the tree I am looking at says he was buried 2 May 1790 Wigan, so if that's correct, Lancashire OPC has a transcription of his burial record - St Thomas the Martyr, Upholland, with his occupation given as Delfman. The "Dictionary of Old Occupations" defines this as "worked in a mine or quarry, also referred to as a delve. Alternatively, may refer to a merchant selling glazed earthenware pottery originally from Delft". But if I were you, I would look for an image of the actual record to check it has been transcribed correctly.

Also, the tree on Ancestry shows Jane Bennet born 1761 as a daughter of Henry and Hannah. Lancashire OPC has a transcription of Jane's baptism record 22 Nov 1761 at St Thomas the Martyr, Upholland, with father as Henry Bennet, a weaver. So it would be worth looking through the baptisms of any other children of Henry's to see if his occupaton is given on those too.

I have someone on my tree who "died in a delph(sic)" and the newspaper report of his death described him as working in a quarry. This was in Lancashire and I think therefore this occupation is more likely than a dealer in delftware.

Aside - maybe the origin of the expression "to dig and delve"?
