1841 Census

In this 1841 census - bottom right.

There's Margaret Hope, a widow , her daughter Barbara Hope 11 both born in county and then a Thomas Hope 17 not born in county - Is it safe to say that Thomas is not the son of Margaret and if not what relationship - he's not with them in 1851.

I don't think I would go as far as "safe to say", but it looks likely that he isn't her son.

Other possible relationships - stepson, nephew, husband's cousin, or child of husband's cousin?

Or does it say Scotland for birthplace?

Thanks all.

Yes I don't believe he is Margaret's son but perhaps a step-son or nephew. Perhaps even her son but given the name Hope on the census.

I think he was born in Scotland too Merry but haven't been able to find him in 1851 census.

All I have for Margaret's husband? is that he was John Hope a tinman living in Crawfords Alley, Berwick on Tweed when Barbara was born in 1830 - no marriage for them or even a death for Margaret. Have just sent off for a death certificate of Margaret Horn in 1853 which could be her hopefully.

If this is the one, Margaret Horn is aged 90.

Have you looked in Scotland for the marriage or deaths of John or Margaret?

Maybe it was the 1852 one in Berwick with age 62.

JBee 16-11-19 16:26

Sorry yes it was the one in Berwick in 1852 that I've sent for which fits in with her age of 61 in 1851 census where she's listed as Margaret Hover.

Hope to get it on Thursday.

As for John Hope think he must have died before Sep 1837 as I can't find his death between then and 1841 census date when Margaret says she's a widow.

However haven't found a marriage for her but her daughter Barbara married her first husband at the irregular marriages at the Lamberton Toll so maybe she did too but there doesn't seem to be a record.

Well I got the death certificate and it is indeed the correct one as it was registered by her daughter Barbara McLaren living at the same address as the 1851 census.

However it says that Margaret is the widow of a William Horn(e) not the John Hope I was expecting.

I then looked at the 1841 census and a William Horn is living in Berwick on Tweed but not with Margaret - the address is Crawfords Alley which is where Barbara was born in 1830.

So it seems that Margaret married this William Horn(e) between 1841 and 1849 when I believe he died in Berwick - will have to send off for that death certificate.
However I cannot find a marriage for them either in Berwick or Scotland so wonder if indeed they were married.
