Martha is at no 38. She is with Ronald A Anson, a house painter, born 3 September 1903.

Otway street

Hi folks
I wonder if anyone remembers the Mills from 5 Otway Street? My aunt Peggy (Margaret) was the youngest of 8 and born 1929. The 2 older siblings were Lily and Francis. Asking for my cousin who isn’t too confident on the internet.
Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum, Cathy.

I don't know whether Allan will remember any of your cousin's family, but in the mean time, here's some information from Ancestry/Findmypast records:

Ancestry Liverpool Electoral Rolls, Otway St:

1918-1919 Robert Mills 5 Otway St

1922-1924 Robert Mills 50 Otway St

1921-1930 Lilian Mills 5 Otway St

Lilian seems to be the mother of the children you mention. I don't know what happened to her husband, but in 1931 Lilian married John Devine:

Marriages Jun 1931
Devine John Mills Liverpool 8b 246
Mills Lilian Devine Liverpool 8b 246

They are together on the 1939 Register but at a different address:

7 Queen St, Liverpool

John Devine b 1 Nov 1866 Dock labourer invalid pensioner
Lilian Devine b 2 Apr 1890 Unpaid domestic duties
Elizabeth May Mills (future surnames Finn and Lunt) b 31 May 1919 Trolley girl airframe factory
Frank Mills b 22 Mar 1922 Joiners apprentice
Lilian Mills (future surname Faulkner) b 19 Mar 1926 at school
One further entry covered over as possibly still living or not proved dec'd. (this may well be Peggy/Margaret)

I also looked at the 1921 census index. You have to pay at the moment to see the actual record, but this is what I've gleaned from playing with the index, to extract as much as possible! These are anyone called Mills in Otway St:

50 Otway St

Robert Mills widower b 1865 at Northumberland

5 Otway St

Lilian Mills married b 1890 at Shrewsbury, Shropshire
William Mills b 1909 at Garston
John Mills b 1911 ditto
Doris Mills b 1917 ditto
Elizabeth Mills b 1919 ditto

Looking at the birth registrations for these children, the mother's maiden surname is Davies.

I should be able to find William (1909) and mother Lilian on the 1911 census but at the moment they are proving elusive. I will look a bit more.....

I think the Robert Mills at 50 Otway St is nothing directly to do with the other Mills family (I had thought this could be Lilian's husband at a different address for some reason).

However, it looks likely her husband was called Robert! There's a marriage, 29 Feb 1908 at St Peter's Liverpool for Lilian Ebrey Davies, spinster aged 19 of College Lane to Robert Mills bachelor 21 labourer of Pitt St. Their fathers are Edwin Ebrey Davies labourer and William Mills sawyer. The witnesses are Christopher Rowe and Zilpah Freeman.

To prove this is the right marriage, I really need to find the Mills family on the 1911 census with their first son, William......

There's a WW1 army pension record for the Robert who married Lilian Davies. He was in the North Lancashire Regiment (service no. 14110). His record includes his marriage details from 1908 and the dates of birth of three children, along with being recorded as Roman Catholic.

William 31 Jun 1909 Garston
John 20 Dec 1911 Wavertree
Ellen 21 Mar 1914

The address for the family is 27 Otway St and we have already seen William and John on the 1921 census with their mother, so that ties together nicely.

I still can't see Lilian, William or Robert on the 1911 census.

Here's something else interesting:

This is the birth reg for Lilian Davies:

DAVIES, LILIAN -
GRO Reference: 1890 J Quarter in ATCHAM Volume 06A Page 652

There's no mother's maiden name recorded which suggests she was actually illegitimate.

On the 1891 census she appears as a nurse child (ie a child being looked after by people not parents/family) with Edwin Ebrey and his wife, Mary Jane Ebrey nee Littlehales who married in 1885 in Atcham District (includes Shrewsbury).

It would seem Lilian Devine married again in 1952:

Marriages Mar 1952
Devine Lilian Francis Liverpool S. 10d 1130
Francis Albert Devine Liverpool S. 10d 1130

as this couple are at 7 Queen Street until at least 1964 (Ancestry erolls).

Here's Lilian's death reg with dob matching the 1939 Register date.

Name: Lilian Francis
Death Age: 86
Birth Date: 2 Apr 1890
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar 1977
Registration District: Liverpool
Inferred County: Merseyside
Volume: 36
