There is an Elspet Gray age 22 born Aberdeen living with the Watt family at Mains of Seaton, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire, as House Servant (according to ancestry), but there are a few Elspet Grays about so no way to know whether it's the right one or not, since she isn't still there in 1861.

And in 1841 ancestry say there is an Elspet Gray age 12 born Aberdeenshire with a Nicol family. Sounds promising, don't you think? It looks as though the details may be quite mangled though, but it just so happens that FreeCEN have transcribed it too and they say:
Aberdeen St Clements
Nicol Chars. M 60 Wright Aberdeenshire
Nicol Helen F 55 Aberdeenshire
Nicol Elespet F 35 Aberdeenshire
Nicol Joseph M 20 Millwright Aberdeenshire
Nicol Jas M 15 Aberdeenshire
Gray Elspet F 12 Aberdeenshire.

Just a bit worried about that "Elespet Nicol" but could she be Elspet's mother? Scottish married women are often listed by their maiden names, aren't they? Ancestry has her as Elester so it might be worth looking at the image to see if you can make out what the name really is.

Oooh, thankyou Kate!

I have Elspet Nichol's parents as Alexander Nichol and Agnes Douglas(s). However, Charles could certainly be a relative. Charles as a first name suddenly pops up again in this family many years later, so it is definitely worth me investigating further.

As you say, there are quite a few Elspet Grey/Gray in 1851 and it's impossible really to work out which she is.

Thankyou for your interest.

Just parking this information until I decide whether it's relevant or not!

Charles Nichol bc1781 Aberdeenshire.

1. Charles Nichol bp 18 Feb 1772 St Nicholas Aberdeen
parents Alexander Nichol and Jean Wymis
These are likely parents - Elspet Douglas Grey marries John Nisbett Wyness. However the birth date of 1772 would make Charles nearly 70 in 1841.

2.Charles Nichol 5 Mar 1780 St Nicholas Aberdeen, parents Georeg Nichol and Elspeth Wilkie Age exactly right but neither parent rings a bell.

3.Charles Nichol 6 April 1790 Echt, aberdeenshire parents Alexander Nichol and Barbara Fife. Nothing significant about this, date is rather late and the name Barbara never appears in any descendants.

4. Charles Nichol married Helen Ruthledge on 3 August 1804 at St Nicholas Aberdeen. Joseph is their son.
