James Banham, Barbadoes 1823

James and Emily Banham had their daughter Emily baptised in the Caribbean at Saint George, Barbadoes on 16 Nov 1823, according to FamilySearch.
I think that James could have been part of the Regiments who were convict escorts at that time. Can anyone tell me if he has a military service record?

Have you got james and Emily's marriage or James' birth at all??

Ammanda Schutz 20-03-11 01:28

Neither, Libby.

No I don't know anything. What I'm trying to disprove or prove is whether Emily Banham who married John McCrohon in 1826 and the Emily who was married to James Banham are the same person. John McCrohon was in the West Indies at the same time as James and Emily Banham. He returned in 1 April 1826 and 23 June 1826 he married a Emily Banham at Winchester. There is a death of a James Banham on 10 Feb 1824 at Banham, Norfolk, but there are lots of Banhams in Norfolk. If I can find James military records it could tie them closer and give a death date.

James Banham could also have been in the navy. Barbados had lots of 'man o war' anchored in the road stead and they used it as a base.

Yes I think Libby's ancestor got me looking at how and why they used convicts to build the dockyard for the navy. So the records could be either of the forces.

My fellow as in the Royal Marines in the West Indies. If push come to shove, email Kevin Asplin.

I'm keeping him up my sleeve. We have a reunion at Easter, so I thought I would wait and see what they have. Then I will contact Kevin with what we know for sure. It would be great to know where the name Emily Ducroix came from and who found John McCrohon's birth in Portugal. I wrote to the PP at East Maitland, to see if there was any further information in the register for John McCrohon Jnr's marriage to Bridget Balkin, unfortunately there wasn't .

I searched the army stuff on FMP searching for James Ban* and then James Banham with Soundex. and date of birth 1790+/-20. Most of the results I got were without a dob transcribed and turned out to be 20thC records when I accessed them.
