1881 census Salford/Manchester
Are there areas missing from this census for Salford/Manchester?
I cannot find Sarah Ashby born 1857 in Hertfordshire and her son John born 1879 in Salford. I've tried just putting first names and place of birth but no success. |
Who is the father/husband?
|
Don't think she was married but an Edward ? has been mentioned as a possible father to the children born up to 1889.
1871 CENSUS https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...69/edit/record 1891 CENSUS https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...68/edit/record place of birth for 1891 has changed to born on the high seas!! but all the other census's give her right birthplace. |
I haven't found anything in 1881 but just wanted to check I'm looking at the right people.
Birth in 1879 mmn Sherman? No marriage between Sarah Sherman and Mr Ashby? 1891 she says born 'on the high seas'? 1901 she says born Aldbury Buckinghamshire? Husband Frank Ashby has reappeared. As the places of birth don't match what you said I may be looking at the wrong birth reg for John, but the other possible birth (in 1880) seemed to be for another couple's baby (Joseph and Mildred) |
Ah, OK so Aldbury is in Herts, just the wrong county in 1901. OH Frank not Edward though...
|
So, was Frank an alias for Edward or a different person/relation?
|
I see from other trees that Frank's real surname was Norman (unconfirmed by me).
Is this where the name Edward came from? Name: John Ashby Gender: Male Baptism Date: 8 Dec 1880 Baptism Place: Chapelry of St. Clement, Ordsall-in-Salford, Lancashire, England Father: Edward Ashby Mother: Sarah FHL Film Number: 1786422 Reference ID: item 3 p 90 |
Sarah's maiden name was Ashby, her mother's maiden name was Sherman.
A daughter put Edward Ashby as her father's name on marriage certificate. Frank Norman didn't come on the scene until 1897 and used her surname on 1901 census. Yes forgot John's baptism had an Edward Ashby as his father but can't see a marriage of Ashby/Ashby. Also the children have Sherman as mother's maiden name except for Frank Norman b1897. |
So she used her own mother's maiden name instead of her own surname because she wasn't married! That's why I was confused at the 1871 census you posted because there were no Shermans on it!
None of which helps with the 1881 census!! Ah, here they are: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...cklabel=Return |
Aside - coincidence that two John Ashbys were baptised on the same day in the same church by the same man. Definitely two different people though.
The baptism gives an address of 1 Skinner St. Edward is a labourer. OC |
That's brilliant Merry
It looks like the right Sarah and John but not sure Mary Ann is her mother or William her brother. |

I was looking in the GRO for a William Ashby with mother's maiden name of Sherman but nothing.
I think Ann Sherman died either in 1872? or 1886? in Hertfordshire. I think Joseph Ashby is Sarah's brother and Mildred is his wife. |
Having said that, of course we don't know that Edward was really an Ashby at all! We know Sarah seemed to like her men to take her name, as seems to be the case with Frank later on.
Is Joseph Ashby (the other father at the 1880 baptisms) a relative of Sarah's? |
There is a Joseph Ashby on this tree who is supposedly a cousin of Sarah's:

Looking at the GRO Joseph's mother's maiden name was Sherman so looks like her brother.
Frank used her surname in 1901 census as he was still married to my great grandmother even when he married Sarah in 1906 lol. I do wonder if there was ever an Edward - even her daughter put Edward Ashby down as Sarah's father instead of James on the death certificate. Thanks all for your help. |
