X Chromosomes

I know women get these from both parents and men only get it from their mothers but I was reading a blog and it was very poorly written and has really confused me.

If a man does X chromosome matching and gets results those matches must be from his maternal side, mustn't they?

The blog was saying matches would be from your mother or your father's mother, but that would only be for women as they have X chromosomes from both parents.

That's right, yes, Toni. But if you are looking at X matches on Family Tree DNA, you have to check the amount of shared DNA on the X chromosome to see whether it is actually significant, because they include even the tiniest amounts.

Thank you. The blogger may have known what they were talking about but they sure couldn't write it.

Another question - distant matches often only match on one segment. Is it possible to only match on the x chromosome?

Yes.

thank you again Kate
