Francis (Frank) Stanbridge

Frank Stanbridge was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire on 17th July 1895.

He was my husbands great uncle.

His parents were Vincent Stanbridge, a number taker on the Midland Railway, and Ann Elizabeth nee Smith.

He was baptised on the 8th September 1895 at St Mary and St Modwen Roman Catholic Church in Burton upon Trent. His Godparents were Oliver J Cotteral and Mary Phelan.

His occupation before joining the army was a Greengrocers Assistant and a Railway employee

He joined the North Staffs Regiment in February 1912, Private 1738) but was discharged as being medically unfit in September 1914.

Attestation North Staffs

He then managed to join the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, private 11046.
He was killed in action on 2nd March 1916 in Flanders.

UK Soldiers died in The Great War

He has no known grave and is commemorated on panel 38 of The Ypres Memorial (Menin Gate), Edinburgh Castle, St Mary and St Modwen RC church in Burton upon Trent and Burton Town Hall.

I do have his death penny, although my mother in law polished it to look like brass when it is supposed to be black.
