Joseph Marrable, 24680

Joseph Marrable was born in Essex in 1893, son of James and Florence (nee Pratt).

He was a lance corporal in the 9th battalion, Essex regiment, and was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on 18 October 1916, aged 22.

His name is listed on the Thiepval Monument.

My father-in-law has just found a small commemorative folder, obviously printed after Joseph's death, which contains a photo, his date of death 'somewhere in France' and this short poem:

'If we could have clasped his dying hand
And heard his last farewell,
It would not have been so hard to part
With one we loved so well.

Day by day we all do miss him,
Words will fail our loss to tell;
But in heaven we hope to meet him,
Evermore with him to dwell.'
