Kit, maybe you already know that John Taylor is in the book Men, women, and property in England, 1780-1870 by Robert John Morris?

I have no doubt this is the family you're looking for. It says that John Taylor's father, also John Taylor, made his will on 7 July 1831 and died eleven days later. The younger John received the public house in the will. It also says how he abandoned it. The extended family and businesses are listed on Union Street, Line Street, Templar Lane.

There's an awful lot more information there about the family, the businesses, the wills. Google "john taylor" bricklayer "union street" leeds and it should bubble right up to the top of the results. It starts on page 198: "Here was the world of John Taylor, builder and bricklayer."

I also see John Taylor, bricklayer, 27 Union Street, in the Transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for Leeds in Pigot's Directory of 1829, on Genuki:

My MMMF David Crampton 1807-1872 was a mason in nearby Horsforth. Perhaps he did business with the Taylors? Something about this neighborhood rang a bell with me as soon as I saw your post. I've walked these streets on old maps looking for some branch of my family.

It seems your John Taylor's parents may have been John and Hannah. I can see a "snippet" in Google books that seems to refer to them. Robert seems to be the other son, brother to your John. (My search terms were "John Taylor" bricklayer leeds.)

Kate the 1837 baptism was a job lot for Tom Hall Taylor (DOB 20/6/1834) and his elder sister, Hannah Taylor (born 8/9/1830)

I jusy looked at the index to death duty registers 1796 - 1903 on FMP and can confirm JT's entry is on there, for the year 1731, probate granted through PCY. Executor David Kirkman.
