One of the witnesses at the marriage was Sarah Mason, if that's any help.

Thanks Kite - I have been down that route but I don't seem to have kept a record of what I found :o so will have investigate again. Although if I didn't make a note of anything it seems likely that I didn't find anything conclusive...

I think that a major problem is that the record keepers of the time heard Benson (their daughters baptism was recorded as Benson) instead of Benzing which doesn't make life any easier!

There is a Sarah Mason widow who married a Thomas Boulton 10 Nov 1817 St Mary Whitechapel and the signature is similar to that witness but not identical.

Sue, to save me wasting time, do you know who the Ann Benzing is who married in 1845?

She is Ann's daughter my 2x gt grandmother!

I've found a baptism in Whitechapel 1791 for an Ann Mason to a Thomas and Sarah.

I think I should at this point say that I have a niggling suspicion that I'm missing a generation here. If you look at the Ancestry deaths and burials for a Christian Benzing you'll find three. The 1837 one is the one I have a cert for where the informant is Ann. The 1824 is a child which I've claimed as Christian and Ann's. But the third burial in 1834 is for a Christian Benzing that I have no other record for. If he was born in 1804 it's quite possible that he is the father of my 2x gt grandmother Ann (and perhaps the child who died) who was b in 1828 (he would of course have to have married an Ann too). The other reason for my doubts is the length of time between Christian and Ann's marrige in 1812 and the birth of the first child in 1823. Your thoughts are welcome!

So the 1837 death is for a 56 year old and his wife is Ann from the death cert, but you think their marriage seems early because the births of 'their' children were in the 1820s?

Is that right?

Merry 07-12-10 09:44

I see the 1834 burial was of Montague Street as well

EDIT - so they all are! lol

I hope I haven't confused you too much Merry! I've been confused by this for several years now. If only I could find some other information about the mystery Christian just to settle the doubts.
