Default A logical approach to WW1 records?

I thought I'd list, just for the name Charles Horne:

  • Surviving service records - WO 363
  • Pension records - WO 364
  • Cwgc names
  • Medal Cards
  • Medal Rolls
I know that not every man who served got a medal (Grandfather didn't)
I know that a lot of the service records do not survive.

I did, however, assume that medal cards and medal rolls would more or less fit together.

Not a chance.

Is anyone else prepare to do this little exercise for relatively rare names?

It looks as if I'd have to construct a complete database and read each record for the sniff of alternative service numbers.
