I use this site a great deal as many of my ancestors come from Lancashire.

I have just noticed the announcement on the home page that all completed registers of bmds over 100 years old are being transferred to the archives at Manchester library.

What concerns me is that it appears that they are removing mmn name from the indexes as they do so which is a backward step as far as I am concerned - one of the great beauties of that site is that it gives mmn from 1837 onwards in most cases.

Grrr. Progress. Not.

Are you sure, OC? I did a search from 1837 to about 1860 for Manchester district (on the name Holden, of course!) - so all for the registers that have already been moved, and probably 3/4 of them or more had mmn.

Uh......I was just looking down the list of (any) names where the registers have been moved to the archives.

But I wonder now, if they are registers which never did have the mmn in the index - I know that Hulme (where all mine were born of course) doesn't have mmn, causing me much exasperation.

I shall watch carefully.......

Manchester Reg District

Sub districts where mmn recorded:

London Road
Ancoats
Market Street
Deansgate

Sub districts where mmn not recorded:

Hulme
Saint George
Cheetham
Chorlton-on-Medlock
Ardwick
Newton
Blackley
Didsbury
Failsworth

The second list of sub districts is longer but some of them appear to be less busy districts (using Holden and Smith as search terms!)

I don't know if any of these have changed as I don't have any part of my tree from Lancs.

Thanks Merry, I think I have panicked and jumped to conclusions because the "Archives and Manchester Central Library" is a new venue to me (on Lancsbmd).

I'm watchin' them, though....

If they are transferring the old registers to the Archives at Manchester Central Library, I wonder whether there is any chance of members of the public being allowed to view them there?

Edit - never mind, I see they say that "Registers will, however, remain closed to public view."
