I don't think he can say that "Mathew" for "Martha" is a mistake in a PR from 1708. I have certainly come across the two names being used interchangably for women at that time before.

I was going to say that I thought Matthew used to be a girl's name too.

My sister has a female friend called Dennis.

And Dennis used to be used as a girl's name a few centuries ago too.
