However, my MFMF went by the name of Henry William BOND on official documents, although he does appear as Henry POND on some censuses. I believe he might have been in trouble when he was younger. I really need more information to confirm that my supposition is correct. Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 29-01-21 at 10:55. |

I have now confirmed this is my 3x-great-grandfather. Like his son, he was also in trouble with the law and he also went by the name of Bond.
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/recor...o77%2f00461546 I have his occupation as a Coachman from his children's baptisms. |

His trial:
Old Bailey Proceedings, 15th September 1819. 1106. WILLIAM HENRY BOND was indicted for stealing, on the 28th of July , at St. Matthew, Bethnal-green , two coats, value 4 l.; three waistcoats, value 12 s.; one hat, value 21 s., and seven pair of stockings, value 3 s. 6 d., the property of Robert Dakers , in the dwelling-house of Samuel Dakers . SAMUEL DAKERS . I keep the Camden's Head, public-house , in the parish of St. Matthew, Bethnal-green ; the prisoner lodged at my house on Monday and Tuesday, the 26th and 27th of July - he was missing at breakfast on the 27th; he had said the night before that he should breakfast with us, but did not. I went up stairs, found him gone, and the lock forced off my brother's box which was in the room where he slept - it was emptied. I missed a sheet off his bed - he had not paid for his lodging. Nobody slept in the room but him. ROBERT DAKERS . I am brother to the last witness; my box was in the room where the prisoner slept - I did not lodge there that night. I had left my box, locked, on Sunday, and had the key in my pocket. On Wednesday I was fetched, and found the articles stated in the indictment gone, which were worth 5 l. 15 s. 6 d. THOMAS BURFORD . I am constable of Bromley. On the 9th of August, about nine o'clock at night, I was sent for to the Bird in Hand, and took the prisoner into custody - the landlord gave me a bundle in the prisoner's presence, which he said he left there, the prisoner acknowledged it - it contained three pair of stockings, a pair of gloves, and other things. He gave no account of them. JOHN ELY . I keep the Bird in Hand. On the 9th of August, about half-past six o'clock in the morning, the prisoner came with two bundles, he sat down in the taproom, and had some beer; in about an hour and a half he asked if he might leave the bundles while he went down to Bow He returned in about two hours, and took one away; returned afterwards, and sold a pair of sheets out of the other bundle to a man for 9 s. In the course of the afternoon I had information, and gave him in charge with the other bundle. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's Defence. I paid his wife for my lodgings, and left. GUILTY . - DEATH . Aged 40. Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Justice Richardson. |

I have another thread about this man:
http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...denhall&page=4 #38 Kate found this: TICKET OF LEAVE No 34/237 26 April 1834 Name: William Henry Bond Ship: Elizabeth (3) Master: Ostler Year: 1820 Native Place: Mildonhill Trade or Calling: Laborer Place of Trial: Middlesex ?? (could be GD but could be GS = General Session or maybe something else) Date of Trial: 15 September 1819 Sentence: Life Year of Birth: 1774 Height: 5 feet 2 & 1/2 Inches Complexion: Ruddy Hair: Brown Eyes: Blue Allowed to remain in the District of Bathurst On recommendation of do Bench Dated 31 May 1833 Written in margin: Cancelled 12 Sep 1850 - So perhaps he came from Mildenhall in Suffolk. His wife's family came from Milton in Cambridgeshire, which is 24 miles away. There is this marriage in 1773: First name(s) Henry Last name Pond Gender Male Marriage year 1773 Marriage date 14 May 1773 Place Mildenhall Church St Mary Spouse's first name(s) Elizabeth Spouse's last name Cullifer Spouse parish - County Suffolk Country England Record set Suffolk Marriage Index but I can't find a baptism for a Henry or William in c. 1776. There is an Elizabeth Pond, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth, baptised 9 Feb 1777 at Mildenhall (on FamilySearch).
They also list a Henry Pond, son of Henry and Elizabeth, baptised 1 May 1774 at Sudbury, Suffolk. When you look up the film number for this one (887390) it is actually BT's for the Archdeaconry of Sudbury, so it covers many parishes but they don't identify which one each record is from. |

Wow! Thanks, Kate.
I might have to make a trip to Bury St Edmunds where the registers are held. Sometimes I forget to use Family Search because there are so many other places to look now. Years ago it used to be my first port of call. |

I've e-mailed the RO at Bury St Edmunds to see if they can help.

I'm very impressed with their prompt reply:
"I would advise that the Archdeaconry of Sudbury at that time covered approx. 300 parishes in the west of Suffolk and part of Cambridgeshire. Therefore we would be unable to search all the entries for 1774 to see which parish the baptism took place in. However; I’ve quickly checked the baptism register for Mildenhall and there is a Henry Pond being baptised there in 1774. We are able to provide a copy of the entry for a cost of £7 to a UK address or £7.50 for a digital copy; subject to completion of the attached forms." So I'm edging closer to thinking that this is my Henry Pond. It's a shame there are not more Suffolk records online. Using the IGI I have had very little success. Tantalisingly, I have glimpsed a few Ponds at Mildenhall from Marriage Allegations, but nothing of immediate use. |
